Senior Activities in Chicago: What To Do Before October

Summertime in Chicago is an attraction in and of itself. For residents at The Admiral at the Lake, it’s a busy time of year. Every week, there are events, concerts and festivals going on, and it could get tough to decide what to do.

As an active senior living community, our residents love spending time outdoors and enjoying new experiences. Before the chill of October starts keeping our residents indoors, here are a few things to cross off your to-do list, especially for seniors with limited mobility.

  1. Watch Free — Yes, Free! — Movies in Local Chicago Parks
Chicago’s public parks come backed with a wide array of fun things to do. In fact, they’re one of the best places to watch a blockbuster film on the big screen. The Chicago Park District has hosted Movies in the Parks for 20 seasons. Whether sitting among the skyscrapers in Millenium Park or in the cool grass near the zoo in Lincoln Park, the scenery makes for a great place to watch the classics and local films. You can find out more about which movies are playing & at what times on their website.
  2. Visit the Chicago Botanical Gardens
We have quite a few resident green thumbs at The Admiral. During the summer, one place that our gardening club loves visiting is the Chicago Botanical Gardens in Glencoe, IL. About a thirty minute drive from The Admiral, the Chicago Botanical Gardens is 385 acres of breathtaking gardens and natural areas. Not only is it wheelchair and ECV accessible, the Buehler Enabling Garden is a teaching garden where people of all abilities can learn techniques to raise their own gardens at home.
  3. Walk/Bike the Beautiful Lakefront Trail
There are very few things that are better than being on the lake. Whether taking a sunset stroll or going on a morning bike ride, residents of The Admiral spend a lot of time on the Lakefront Trail. Stretching along Lake Michigan, the 18-mile path runs through various beaches and parks where visitors can join a group activity or take in the Chicago skyline. Seniors must make the most out of living on the lake while they can!
  4. Visit Brookfield Zoo
Just a Metra trip away, Brookfield Zoo is a must for Chicago residents. Owned by the Chicago Zoological Society and the Cook County Forest Preserve District, this zoo in the suburbs is home to hundreds of species of animals. Visitors with limited mobility can also reserve wheelchairs or ECVs ahead of time. Brookfield zoo regularly hosts social events and offers a variety of conservation education programs for visitors of all ages.
  5. Local Farmers Markets in Chicago
Every week until October, you’ll find amazing fruits, foods, and delectables at any of the local farmers markets. Near The Admiral is the Uptown, Andersonville or Lincoln Square Farmers Market where visitors can explore popular vendors in the area. Residents love walking through and picking up samples of farm fresh products.

With such an ideal location, The Admiral at the Lake is perfect for residents who want to take advantage of everything Chicago has to offer. Learn about the nearby attractions and events that our residents always have on their weekend checklists.
