Exceeding Expectations.

You want the very best for your loved one. So do we. Our memory care program caters to the individual needs and preferences of those living with memory impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. While memory and dementia care services aren’t meant to cure these conditions, our approach is designed to enhance our residents’ cognitive abilities and reduce frustrations common with memory loss. To put it simply, we are here to help make life as joyful and fulfilling as possible for your loved one.

Our setting in the Lakeshore neighborhood of Chicago is unmatched in convenience for you and comfort for your loved one. Offering memory care on Lake Michigan, the Admiral at the Lake combines a lively, urban setting with luxurious residences and amenities. We enhance our residents’ lives with highly personalized care plans that are tailored to each individual, creating a safe and positive experience for your loved one — and for you.

Personalized Care Plans.

At The Admiral, we understand that each of our residents deserves care that meets them where they are. Some require more living assistance while others require minimal support programs. We deliver just the right amount of care and support that are needed. How? By taking the time to get to know each of our residents and their families personally.

We learn our residents’ stories; we know about the lives they led before coming to us. We see how Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia affect them, and create personalized care plans that meet and address those needs today. Understanding the Alzheimer’s and dementia progress, we constantly monitor and assess your loved one to make sure we are providing the most appropriate care and support. We want our residents to feel understood, safe and secure. But we also want them to be engaged and actively enjoying their days.

The Admiral Excels in Memory Care.

Memory support is a specialized field of senior care and is wholly different from Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. People living with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s require unique care and attentive support.

There are many ways to evaluate a Memory Care residence. The Admiral has been in business for a very long time – 164 years to be exact. As a Life Care Community (also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community), we have not only created a full spectrum of residential retirement options over the years, but we were one of the first communities in the country to be fully licensed as a dedicated Memory Care provider.

The Admiral at the Lake offers care and support with love.

Here are three essential features you should require when choosing a memory care community for your loved one.

#1. Assessment and Care Planning Go Hand in Hand.

When researching and touring memory care communities, you will see differences between them. The best memory care communities know firsthand that the right care staff – comprised of the best trained and educated professionals – can make a BIG difference in the lives of each resident.

First, we do a thorough clinical and cognitive assessment of each prospective resident. This assessment is inclusive and holistic. We want to know as much about your loved one’s life, past and present, so that we can provide the best therapies and tailored care each day. We want to know what they can do, what frustrates them, what challenges them, and what they enjoy.

When you choose The Admiral, our Care Team develops a written Memory Care plan. The Memory Care plan details the daily and weekly goals the Care Team will strive for based on the  specific assets and challenges your loved one experiences.

We work with our internal and external team to minimize common dementia related behaviors, including:

  • Wandering
  • Agitation
  • Repetitive speech or actions
  • Paranoia
  • Sleeplessness/sundowning

With the right planning in place, memory care communities can help manage the symptoms of these behaviors. We also consider whether innovative new therapies, such as pet therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and nature engagement therapy may be embraced by your loved one.

#2. We Foster Connection Through Interior Design.

People with dementia can be easily overwhelmed with the simplest of external stimulation. Noise, music, loud voices and machines can all create stress for residents with memory challenges. Our Memory Support neighborhood is designed to enrich residents’ lives by promoting interactivity – when desired – and evoking pleasant memories through familiar schedules and surroundings.

At The Admiral, we’re serious about engaging spaces in Memory Care. Careful design choices like these can make residents feel safe, comfortable, and above all, happy. You will find:

  • A creative arts studio and outdoor gardens with spectacular views of the Chicago skyline.
  • Circular floor plans that enhance walking and exploration.
  • Wide hallways that reduce claustrophobia.
  • Plentiful natural light.
  • Secure entrances and exits and 24/7 monitoring to keep track of each resident at all times.

#3. Fostering Friendship and Inclusion While Respecting Cognitive Needs.

Seniors with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease may lose memories, but they do not lose their feelings or their emotions. In fact, processing and understanding emotions gets harder. A majority of seniors with memory loss will experience loneliness, boredom, anxiety and frustration.

Our experience tells us that one of the best ways to reduce these feelings is through group activities and routine daily interactions. Although some activities may appear simple, they are intentional. We welcome, encourage, engage and play. This simple approach can have dramatic effects.

We also balance daily routines with outings that meet the changing needs of our residents. From shopping to family visits to museum tours to musical events, we strive each day to cultivate special moments our residents will enjoy.

Throughout the day, together, we explore opportunities in engaging spaces, like our creative arts studio and outdoor garden with spectacular views of the Chicago skyline. These kinds of activities provide continued connections to the world around us.
